Globe Cafe & Tapas welcomes (back!) new Executive Chef, Grant de Montreuil to the Big White culinary scene.

Chef Grant de Montreuil was born and raised in Kelowna and is no stranger to our local mountain. During the late 90’s he owned and operated the “DeMontreuils” restaurant at The White Crystal Inn, and he’s keen to get back to a mountain kitchen… and to the slopes!

His family has been farming in this valley since the early 1900s and he grew up on a small farm growing fruit and operating a market garden. He began his culinary career in 1979 as a dishwasher, like so many top chefs, and after graduating he pursued culinary roles in Calgary, Edmonton and finally, while in Vancouver at the English Bay Café, he began a formal apprenticeship. After completing his Red Seal he began kitchen management training at the English Bay Café, while Sous Chef. A move back to the Okanagan in 1990 saw him as Executive Chef with the Hotel Eldorado and two years later he started the Certified Chef de Cuisine program with the Canadian Culinary Institute, which is the highest you can go in the Canadian industry.

In the mid 90’s Chef Grant was at his busiest and opened 4 restaurants including DeMontreuils Downtown, Old Vines Patio at Quails Gate Winery, The Teahouse at Kelowna Land and Orchards, and DeMontreuil’s White Crystal at Big White Ski Resort. After 8 intense years he closed the business operations to take on the new challenge of exec chef roles at the Naramata Heritage Inn & Spa followed by Summerhill Winery. When a family opportunity presented itself he dived into his next personal adventure which involved fast paced mobile event catering at music festivals, including Shambala. as well as contracts with various heli ski operations where he got a taste for the snow again! Now settled back in Kelowna, he will be bringing his talents and experience to Globe’s kitchen with a post Covid return to their Tapas & Mediterranean roots, along with a new twist on the daytime menu for hungry skiers. Globe opens for full winter hours for the 2021/22 season from November 25th. Come say hello (again!) to Chef Grant when you are on the hill!
