FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
When do seasonal employment positions start? Our season kicks off from the end of November, with a closing date in early to mid-April. Start dates vary depending on the position you have applied for, but typically begin one or two weeks prior to winter operations starting.
When do online applications need to be submitted? Positions for the following winter season get posted from May/June. Please submit your online application as soon as you see a position you are interested in to avoid disappointment! Positions will remain listed on our Job Openings page until they are filled. If you require a work visa to work in Canada, make sure you apply for your visa before submitting an application for employment.
What else should I know about working at Big White Ski Resort? Come prepared! Mother Nature is unpredictable, so winter positions may not start until late November, and some do not start until mid-December. We recommend that you come to Big White with approximately $3,000 CAD to ensure that you will be able to pay for accommodation, groceries, a phone plan, transportation and entertainment until you are gainfully employed.
How do I get from Kelowna Airport or downtown Kelowna to Big White? We offer a shuttle from Kelowna Airport that will bring you directly to the mountain once the resort is open for the season (click here for more information). You can also check the "Official Big White" Facebook group for ride sharing options prior to the resort opening.
How can I find a hostel in Kelowna or Big White when I get there? Hostel accommodation is available in Kelowna and at Big White – it’s a good idea to make a reservation in advance as these hostels fill up quickly. Please find some suggested options below:
Samesun Hostel Kelowna
Kelowna Okanagan Lake Hostel
Urban Retreat Hostel at Big White
How can I find housing (if I am not registered for staff accommodation)? To find shared accommodation renting from a private landlord, check out the “Official Big White” Facebook group or visit Kijiji or Castanet.net.
I'm not from Canada. What do I need to do to work at Big White Ski Resort? In order to be legally entitled to work in Canada, you will need the following:
- A valid work permit
- Social Insurance Number
- A Criminal Record Check
- Govern ment-issued photo identification (i.e. passport, driver’s license etc.)
How do I obtain a work permit? Please visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website to find out how you can work in Canada. A majority of our international staff take part in the International Experience Canada Working Holiday visa program – please visit https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/iec.html for more information. Please remember that the application process can take several months.
How do I apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)? You should apply for your Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) as soon as possible, as you will require this to work in Canada. Please visit https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin.html for more information and to apply. Alternatively, you can apply in person at a Service Canada Centre (an appointment will be required).
Do I need travel insurance? If you are travelling overseas, you shouldn’t even think twice about getting travel insurance. Although it is not mandatory, Big White highly recommends you set something up before coming. If you get sick or hurt, you won’t want to be without it! Read the fine print of the travel insurance policy to see what is covered (and what is not), to be sure it meets your needs. Make sure skiing, snowboarding and any non-standard sports you intend to try are covered under your insurance. Emergency Medical coverage should definitely be included. Understand what would cause your policy to be rendered void, such as an accident that occurs while under the influence of alcohol. Some insurers may also have the right to withdraw cover if you have an accident when failing to follow local rules. Always keep your insurance company’s contact information and policy number at hand in case there is an emergency.
